Handmade Earrings by Moto Jewelry, Santa Barbara, CA

My girlfriend, Sarah, who is also a photographer, has been wanting me to take some photos of the jewelry she hand makes and sells. Her Jewelry can be found at motojewelry.blogspot.com and her photography can be found at www.SarahSakamoto.com

A couple nights ago, I finally got around to doing a shot for her. We still have several ideas that we want to get done but I figured I would share this one now. I had a bunch of bamboo from a tropical food shoot(found here) that happened a few days ago and really wanted to figure out a way to use it. My first thought was to lay it down and some how style the jewelry on top of that, but I knew that would be the typical first move. So to get it out of my head I started to setup the lights for the shoot and right in the middle of that it hit me… why not stand up the bamboo and give it some depth.

The first try failed miserably, I was trying to stand up the bamboo by using A-Clamps and that would work for a few minutes and then eventually the A-Clamp would lose grip, snap together and send the bamboo flying to knock down all the other pieces. So I had to get a bit creative with the setup. Didn’t have much around but my ingenuity and creativity pulled through to give me….

The whole shoot took around 2-3 hours with re-touching because the idea for the final image kept changing and getting better. Not to mention it took some time to light the jewelry.

Without further ado… here is the final image.

Hope you enjoy… Crits are always welcome,

JOy - Green bamboo and the jewelry (black and brown) looks nice. That’s a good idea to stand them up! You can also cut the bamboo with angle too. But, you need a really sharp nife. Doesn’t bamboo have any leaves with it? To make real, you can hang jewelry from the stem also.
