Dessert’s… Chocolate Lava Cake, Santa Barbara, CA Food Photography

Today… was a delicious day. I went and shot some more food with the same people from last post. Mike, Ramsey and our wonderful chef Leigh. I didn’t really go into to much detail but Ramsey has helped me out in the past on a couple shoots. Most recently, my basketball video shoot, which can be found right over here. He is an aspiring photographer, with some great ideas and a drive to get some shoots done.

We had a great time “shooting” desserts… But really it was a ploy to have our chef, Leigh, bake us up some amazingness. We started shooting at around 11am, so we figured why not do a shot outside in the shade. So what we did, is setup a shot on this interesting table that was outside their apartment. We had a silver reflector bouncing in from the direct sunlight to give some definition to the Lava Cake, along with a medium softbox on a hensel porty 1200ws strobe to provide fill and light on the background. We started out with the glasses and the plate, but something was missing. After about 30 minutes, we finally got the background down with some weird bowl and vine from the yard. Once it was all set, we snapped a few different variations of light with the camera on a tripod so I could photoshop which parts of the light we liked best. She made like, 10 of these little things soo um… There was no shortage of chocolate.

The Pumpkin Mousse shot was shot on this deep brown table in their kitchen with a bit of window light coming in from the right side. We used the same hensel strobe with the medium softbox, but we also added in a 4×6′ diffusion panel in front of that… One to knock the light level down a little further, two to get some nice highlights on the glass. We also used a silver reflector in the back right to get highlights on the back edge of the glass. We were a bit rushed on this one since Ramsey had a flight to catch and Leigh had to get to class. I think it is fine, but definitely could have used a bit more time to get it just right. This stuff tasted just like pumpkin pie… Basically I want thanksgiving to be TOMORROW thanks to that little cup of ultimate goodness.

Enjoy and crits are always welcome,
Bryant
